Supernova SN1987a is 170,000 light-years from earth. Its unexploded star was visible on earth on day 4, and the image of its explosion (A) was still about 6,000 light-years away. Supernova SN1054 is 6,500 light-years from earth. Its unexploded star was visible on earth on day 4, at which time the image of its explosion (B) was about 5,000 light-years away.

A further illustration of the problem occurred in 1987 when astronomers had the rare good fortune of catching a supernova on camera. This one, called “SN1987a” (because it was the first one recorded for 1987) occurred in the nearby galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The two Magellanic Cloud galaxies (called Large and Small) are visible at night near the south celestial pole. The LMC is about 12 times and the SMC is about 5 times the apparent diameter of the moon. The LMC is about 170,000 light-years away. According to the “created light beam” scenario, we should not be able to see SN1987a for another 164,000 years!

Could God have created the “appearance” of an explosion in the light beams that He created in transit from the LMC? God can do anything He wants to do, but the great thing about the God of the Bible is that He gives us reason as well as revelation — He is not deceptive or capricious.

In the case of the adulthood of Adam and Eve and the possible presence of tree rings, we can see reasons for the maturity and functionality of the creation, a side effect of which is to give the “appearance” of age if viewed from a naturalistic perspective. However, no one has advanced any reasons to explain why God might have created the “appearance of explosions” in light beams that have no basis in the real history of the stars they represent. Because it involves the creation of a “phony history,” it lays God open to a charge of deception in a manner unlike the creation of Adam as a mature adult. A significant challenge for creationist cosmology is therefore to explain events like the supernovae of 1054 and 1987a.

There is another kind of evidence that we also need to consider, which falls somewhere between the bellybutton and the supernova. One example is the fusion power of the sun. The sun emits enormous amounts of energy and, according to the most recent evidence,7 all of this energy comes from a nuclear fusion reaction in the heart of the sun, but it takes a very long time for a photon of light energy, emitted from the nuclear reaction in the core, to reach the surface. Calculations suggest a time scale of about a million years. The reason for the delay is that the hugely powerful magnetic field and the enormous turbulence created by the nuclear furnace cause the photons to bounce around interminably inside the sun. Now if the sun is only 6,000 years old, it means that the light we receive today never did originate in the heart
